Scientists Discovered Drugs That Blocks AIDS

Scientist at the Gladstone Institutes have identified the precise chain of molecular events in the human body that drives the death of most of the immune system’s CD4 T cells as an HIV infection leads to AIDS.
“Gladstone has showed how the body’s own immune response to HIV causes CD4 T cell death via a pathway triggering inflammation, and secondly by identifying the host DNA sensor that detects the viral DNA and triggers this death response,” said Dr. Robert F.
Further, they have identified an existing anti-inflammatory drug that in laboratory tests blocks the death of these cells — and now are planning a Phase 2 clinical trial to determine if this drug or a similar drug can prevent HIV-infected people from developing AIDS.

Nigerian Police Officers Living Like Refugees

The traffic policewoman who later requested a bottle of stout resides in the Women Police Barracks, situated behind the Obalende Barracks.

In a chat with this correspondent in the drinks joint, she laments that her experience over the years in service has made her desist from raising her hopes too high over improvement in welfare of policemen and women.

“Do I need to explain how I feel about the state of the barracks where we (policemen and women) live in? You have seen it all yourself here. It is the same situation in many places. Please, let’s talk about other things because it appears that we have long been forgotten,” she laments as she sips a glass of beer.

Doctors who treated the seven-time Formula One world champion said he would ‘have died’ had he not been wearing a crash helmet. "Michael Schumacher was the victim of very serious trauma. He was very agitated when he arrived and we decided he was in a critical situation and he quickly went into a coma. The Politics and Powerful Men That Will Define The New Year

Days to the end of the year, Nigeria is set to witness a spillover into the New Year of some major events and issues that dominated the political clime in 2013. Curiously, these events and issues started to pile up in the middle of the outgoing year and culminated in phenomenal developments to the extent that the ruling Peoples Democratic Party was shaken to its foundations.

In effect, the major issues in the polity set to spill over from 2013 are mostly wrapped around the PDP and the raging broom revolution championed by the APC that is taking over in a grand style.

How To Manage Your In-Laws and Live In Peace

In Nigeria, a man’s in-laws are major part of the family. In some cultures, a man’s in laws are perceived as his gods. When you are in a long-term committed relationship, it is inevitable that you and your lover interact with each other’s families. Some men, though, never leave the influence of their families – especially their mothers, the tension of this tends to create problems that bubble just beneath the surface, exploding when other situations in the relationship are tense.

The easiest way for one to avoid in-law problems is to...
Establish friendly but strict boundaries. But for these boundaries to work, you and your man both have to enforce them. If that were easy to do and he could be relied on, there would not be the tension that exists. Add to this mess, fundamental personality conflicts, and you have the basis for something that could destroy your relationship.

Nollywood Life: Rich Industry, Poor Actors and Actresses

The luxury is complete. Fast cars, big houses, fat bank accounts and pretty girls…at least in the movies. But the real lives of many Nollywood actors and actresses do not reflect what they portray on screen. The Nation's Seun Akioye examines the real lives of the movie stars.

Whoever has seen Kayode Odumosu, known widely by his stage name Pa Kasumu in any of his numerous films, would believe the veteran actor epitomises the perfect life. Sometimes, he was the rich and influential father and at another time, he rose from grass to grace. But most of the time, he was the voice of reason, intelligent, a disciplinarian and an honest fellow. Many envied him and thought that Pa Kasumu, now 60 years old, must be very rich.

That was Pa Kasumu, the veteran actor in Nigeria’s make-believe world called Nollywood. To know Kayode Odumosu, you will have to alight from your day dream of cozy world of wealth and glamour, the mansion in Lekki, fine clothes and easy life. You will have to descend into the often dangerous and perilous streets of Mushin, a ‘ghetto’ in Lagos where even the average Nigerian may not contemplate as a place of permanent abode.

Presidency Falls Out With Amaechi

The Presidency and Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State are locked in a war of words over allegations that President Goodluck Jonathan is training snipers and keeping 1,000 top politicians on a secret watch list.
“Governor Amaechi knows what he is talking about and this is not just a claim; it is what is happening. There are indices the governor will use to buttress his point. We will not make many comments now until the invitation from the NHRC comes.
“One thing you should know is that Governor Amaechi does not say one thing today on an issue and say another thing tomorrow on the same issue. You are aware of the battle between us and the police. Considering all we have passed through in the hands of the police, would anybody doubt the fact that the governor is on the Presidency’s watch list?”
Amaechi had opened up recently, saying: “I read the President’s letter; he said Obasanjo should prove and name those on the list. I am number one on the list. I am number one.”

Female Comedian Princess 7-Month-Old Marriage Crashes

Marriages involving female entertainers can only last when they learn to drop their fame in the bedroom and in the kitchen. This is mostly the problem as they often want their husband to treat them like their fans do.

It is sad but it has happened! The seven-month marriage between Oluwadamilola Adekoya, popularly known as Princess and Adeshola Jeremiah has crashed as the busty comedian say she and her young husband have gone their separate ways due to “irreconcilable differences”.

It was gathered that the marriage had not been a bed of roses as both parties had been having incessant fights, which necessitated family and friends intervening on several occasions.

Princess, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Lagos, got married on May 8, 2013.

Confirming her marriage break up, Princess said: “It is true, my marriage has ended. We got married in May. We tried to work it out but we couldn’t. It happened a while ago. It is not easy for a marriage to end. All the excitement of marriage has passed. We wanted to keep it out of the public for a while.”

Graphic photos: Househelp forcefully delivers 6-month old baby

A very scary event took place recently at Utak Street, off Nkemba Street, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. Three months ago, a busy working class single mum employed a 17 year old girl to help take care of her 2 year old daughter.

Recently, while the lady was engrossed with a TV programme, her daughter needed attention and she called the help more than three times and the help kept responding that she was in the toilet. When it became unnecessarily too long, she tiptoed into the help's room and opened the toilet door. To her horror, she met the help squatting with blood all over the bathroom with a stillborn newly delivered baby hanging in-between her legs. She screamed and ran out of her apartment into the street. The entire neighbourhood came out and it took the intervention of neighbours to calm her down. The neighbours also helped rushed the help to the hospital. While in the hospital, she refused treatment and claimed she drank herbs and was given some to insert in her vagina to force the baby out. The help said she was warned not to allow orthodox medical treatment.

Lebanese boss beats up pregnant factory worker in Lagos, woman loses 7-month pregnancy

Like many Nigerians working under similar conditions, took everything calmly even though she complained to her close friends that she was in deep pain put up a bold face and continued with her duty, bearing the shame and physical assault in her stride all in a bid to secure her job and that of two of her siblings who also works in the company.
However; when the news of her assault reached her two siblings; they made an attempt to retaliate on her behalf, Ossai dissuaded them from physically roughing up Noine, begging them to consider the financial burden they bear with the twelve thousand naira month salary paid each of them, as any attempt to confront Noine will eventually lead to their collective loss of income, a situation they cannot cope with giving the fact that they have an aged sick mother to take care off as well as other regular and emerging bills to pay.
Pregnant Ossai was helped home by some of her co-workers and her siblings that day; she resumed work the next day a Saturday 14th December even as the pain continued intermittently, even in pains and being pregnant, she carried out her supervisory cleaning assignments in order to save the family income. On Sunday she rested at home being a work free day even as the pain increased. She resumed on Monday but the pain had increased considerably and she could not carry out her cleaning supervisory assignments, at a point she leaned on the mop stick and clutched her stomach. By 10 pm on Monday she noticed patches of blood on her underwear, the flow progressed steadily and rapidly into clots of blood dripping out of her.

Nigerian doctor attacks female patient who disagreed with diagnosis

A Nigerian doctor allegedly attacked a female patient in his surgery when she disagreed with his diagnosis, UK Daily Mail reports.
Dr Abiodun Bale, 42, (pictured above) grabbed Sheena Cunningham as she tried to leave his consultation room in tears after they argued over treatment for a facial condition.
The doctor from Nigeria denied assault when he appeared in court but was found guilty after a two-day trial. He was given a six-month  conditional discharge but will face a disciplinary hearing at work and could lose his job.

Import waiver granted First Lady to import 200 cars: Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala replies Sahara Reporters

The revised waivers policy replaces the old regime of individual waivers with the objective of boosting key sectors such as agriculture, power, gas and mines/steel. The strategy is to deploy waivers as a stronger tool of economic development.

Part of the information published by the Federal Ministry of Finance was a list of state governments, private sector organizations and other institutions which were granted waivers to bring in vehicles for various events including sports festivals, conferences and workshops. This practice did not begin with the Jonathan administration.

Beneficiaries of the waivers for vehicle imports include state governments such as Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Lagos as well as organizations such as the continental First Ladies Forum which was granted a waiver for vehicles required for their event hosted by Nigeria. The First Lady did not in any way personally benefit from this waiver.

It is important to recall the fact that the country has a nascent leasing industry and no company in the sector currently has the quantity and quality of vehicles required for such events. Government is encouraging private sector organizations with the requisite focus and expertise in this area and the hope is that soon it would no longer be necessary to grant such waivers.

I Have Done My Duty To You ––Obasanjo Tells Jonathan

Ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday declined to make fresh reaction to the open letter sent to him by President Goodluck Jonathan, which was a response to his earlier 18-page long letter on the polity.

Obasanjo’s spokesman, Tunde Oladunjoye, told newsmen today at the hilltop residence that Obasanjo will not further trade words with Jonathan, nor dignify his letter with a fresh response.
“I will maintain my serenity, because by this letter I have done my duty to you as I have always done, to your government, to the party, PDP, and to our country, Nigeria”.
Obasanjo in envisaging Jonathan’s response had clearly stated what his position will be: he will play mute.

In a statement on Monday, his spokesman said:
"Since the publication of the letter written by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, which was in response to the letter earlier written by the revered former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, we have received several requests from local and international media, asking to know Chief Obasanjo’s reaction...

"Chief Obasanjo acknowledges Mr President’s letter/response, however, Baba as he already indicated in his December, 2, 2013, letter does not wish to make further comments beyond the contents of his last
letter to Mr President or react to the said letter/response from Goodluck Ebele Jonathan."

Meet America's first openly gay Imam

The land of freedom, America, now boast of an openly gay Imam. And the Muslim community is not happy about it. Imam Daayiee Abdulah, the only openly gay Imam in America & possibly the world, was born and raised a Baptist Christian faithful in Detroit but converted to Islam while studying in China. Upon his conversion, he noticed the spiritual gap lesbians, gays & transsexuals in the Islamic faith had and decided to become an Imam so as to provide an ideal Islamic support for them, he says.

"Being an openly gay imam and having been identified as such, I do get a lot of feedback and also kickback, but that's OK,” he said. “I think that when people are unfamiliar with things, they tend to have an emotional knee-jerk reaction to it. Sometimes necessity is the mother of invention. And because of the necessity in our community, that's why I came into this particular role."
Abdulah, who says he told his parents he was gay at age 15, converted to Islam at the age of 33 and went on to study the religion in Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Asked what was his first spiritual act as an Imam, Abdulahi says it was the funeral for a gay Muslim who had died of AIDS.

Amaechi Gives Jonathan One Condition To Forgive Him

Rivers State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, has given President Goodluck Jonathan one condition to forgive him and the Peoples Democratic Party.
Amaechi said, “We gave the President nearly 2.1 million votes. Let him tell us one project he has done for us. But the President cannot.
"I have challenged the President that I belong to APC...
If he wants me back in PDP let him return the oil wells to the Kalabari people and I will come back. Instead, he will take more. One of our sons, a Kalabari son, said the oil wells were taken under Rufus Ada-George. Tell him I say he is lying. He never served in any government. I served under Ada-George government and there was no oil well taken from Rivers State then.
“I served under Dr. Peter Odili. The oil well was taken in 2006. They put the money in an escrow account and by 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, they took all the money and gave to our brothers and converted Soku to Bayelsa.”
Amaechi said he can forgive and reconsider PDP and the Jonathan government if the president would return all Rivers oil wells ceded to his home state of Bayelsa.

The governor, who stated this on Monday during a mass rally organised by the APC at Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt, said despite the 2.1 million votes Jonathan received in the state in 2011, the Federal Government had not executed one single project in Rivers
